Due to its strategic location the fort was a major asset in the defence of the region. This prompted the Portuguese rulers to wage wars with Hindu rulers to establish their right over the fort in 1763.
HEAVY ARTILLERY  INCLUDING  CANONS WERE BROUGHT IN FOR DEFENCE

The Portuguese soon established their Citadel here including barracks , quarters for their officers etc ,all of which are in ruins now except for the Church.

PARTS OF THE FORT WALL AND BASTIONS STILL REMAIN INTACT
Meager remains of the fort walls do bring back memories of a bygone era. But it is the spectacular views from the fort, especially from the steep cliffside on the south, that make a visit to this fort an absolute delight.
