Cabo De Rama also referred to as Cape Ram derives it name from Lord Rama, Hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana , and is believed to have been one of the many abodes of lord Rama and his wife Sita during their 14 years of exile in the forest.

Cabo De Rama fort is situated in Cancona,the southernmost Taluka of Goa,around16 kms from Agonda beach. It is located on a high headland commanding spectacular views over the length of Colva bay and the coast of Cancona

The Fortress was built by a Sunda prince,was captured and expanded by the Portuguese and was temporarily occupied even by the British for two short periods. Later, this fort housed a government prison till 1955 and was abandoned again.

Due to its strategic location the fort was a major asset in the defence of the region.This prompted the Portuguese rulers to wage wars with Hindu rulers to establish their right over the fort in 1763.

HEAVY ARTILLERY INCLUDING CANONS WERE BROUGHT IN FOR DEFENCE
The Portuguese soon established their Citadel here including barracks , quarters for their officers etc ,all of which are in ruins now except for the Church.

Meager remains of the fort walls do bring back memories of a bygone era. But it is the spectacular views from the fort, especially from the steep cliffside on the south,that make a visit to this fort an absolute delight.
